Field Notes

Description:

Small white spider with black spots and red/orange and black lags. Looks a bit like certain types of crab spider with the same colorings, but doesn't have the same shape or those sharp looking protrusions one usually see on crab spiders in Latin America.

Picture is taken in the Peruvian Amazon

Species ID Suggestions

Spiny orb weaver

Gasteracantha cancriformis

Thank you @apbookreader923, the spiny orb weavers were what I was refering to when talking about crab spiders. As you might see, the spider in my picture doesn't have those spines, also the general shape and the legs of the spider are also dissimilar from the spiny orb weaver. Seems to me the pattern and the shapes of the black spots also differ from the spiny orb weaver. I'll see if I've got another picture from a different angle....
