Field Notes

Description:

These geese sure do get around! Back at the pond I've seen them at before. Tensions continue with the third adult goose (it has a shorter neck, which makes it easy to identify) in the creche - although the goslings happily follow it around as they do the alpha (?) adults. Something interesting happened while I was observing the creche on this day - one of the gosling-free creches flew in and joined them at the pond. It was another creche of 3. One of these geese was clearly trying to encourage the short-necked goose to come swim with them. (All the while, the "parent" geese - especially the one I assume is the father - were hissing up a storm and warding off the "intruders" from their goslings.) I wonder if the welcoming "intruder" goose was the 4th member of the creche that disappeared after I first starting watching the goslings this season?

Habitat:

Spotted in a detention/retention pond in an office building complex in Kennesaw, GA
