Description:

big common snapping turtle, massive and heavy and fierce! will snap like a spring-loaded trap. normally dwells on the pond bottom, this female was trapped for scientific purposes and released shortly after tagging @ Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.

Habitat:

freshwater

Notes:

amazing and looks prehistoric. rarely seen on land

I saw one of these at the Jamaica bay reserve many years ago. He was walking across the path in front of us and was entirely unconcerned by our presence. Nice spotting.
