Field Notes
Description:
The male is in the first two photos eating some seed, and the female is in the last three photos taking a drink of water. Both sexes have a black and white striped back with a solid gray belly. They also both have a large yellow patch on the back of the head and a small yellow patch at the base of the bill, but the male is distinguished from the female by having a red patch on top of the head. I'm not sure what the male was doing to get his chest so dirty, but I've never seen one look like that before.
Habitat:
At the bird blind in Palo Duro Canyon SP.
