Description:

very small, less than 1cm

Habitat:

tropical rainforest

Notes:

Chun Xing Wong spotted this hiding on a rubbish bin in Tawau hills park. I hiked the same trail the next evening and spotted it again in the same place, except it was red in colour. I was going to take a photo but got distracted by something else I spotted and then forgot to come back to it.

Very similar to: Crowned Slug Moth Isa textula (Herrich-Schäffer, 1854), unfortunately this species is not unmarked in Indonesia.

Finally got the right genus ID. This is a Pseudonirmides sp. caterpillar

Thanks Chun. It does look very similar, I guess with the sharp outline of the head on Isa textula, being the main difference.

By the way Dan, this might be a Slug Moth caterpillar. It shares a lot of similarity with the larva of Isa textula.

Thanks stacey.Chun has great eyes for the small stuff. I think you might be right too, probably tortoise beetle larva instead of a caterpillar.

@staccyh, I helped Dan to find this one and some other cool things :-) @Dan, I have a wild guess. I think this might be a tortoise beetle larva. You mentioned that it turned red the next day, possibly it is becoming this one http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/234226040
