Field Notes

Description:

Small fungi (approx. 2cm) emerging from hard soil. Pale grey with white/grey gills, thick white stalk, striated top. Still checking ID so would welcome suggestions.

Habitat:

Found in dry sandy soil in dry woodland environment days after heavy rains in north east NSW.

Notes:

I am amazed at the power of something like this fungi a small organism pushing its way through the hard crusted surface of the soil.

Species ID Suggestions

Thank you RandyL. I went back to get more photos this morning but found the night feasters had beaten me to it! I'll have a look at images of the types you have suggested & keep an eye out for any of the same species in the field that I could examine closely.
Perhaps an Amanita from the section Vaginatae. I think you would need to dig up the specimen and look at the base to get down to a species name.
Thank you Fyn Kynd! I'll definitely use this image in my natural history presentations.
