Description:
Australian Cypress (sometimes referred to as 'White Cypress' or, incorrectly, as 'Cypress pine') belongs to the genus Callitris, of which there are about 16 species. My neighbour says this is a Swamp Cypress, but I don't know if that's actually correct. There are 14 species native to Australia, the other two to New Caledonia. Australian Cypress is also naturalised in Florida, USA. Australian Cypress has a similar appearance to trees of the Pinus species. Photos 2&3 show some sort of fruiting body. I've not seen them before so am interested to see how they develop.
Habitat:
Growing in local park. This section of the park is its lowest point, and during heavy rains the water tends to pool here and can become quite deep. Obviously the water table here is shallow enough for this tree to thrive.
Notes:
No cypress 'knees' with this spotting, but here's another spotting of native cypress - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/27732206 I really like the appearance of these trees. They're really gnarly and look like they're straight off the set of Lord of the Rings.
