Field Notes

Description:

Tiny insect homes. So perfect. First three are hatched and last two are occupied and on a Pine Tree. The home looks just like the twig bark. Pupation occurs in a usually broadly oval, papery cocoon either in litter surface or in the ground.

I saw a bunch of these when I was visiting friends in New Hampshire! I believe that they are pupal homes (cocoons) of some insect, perhaps a wasp. Still working on an ID. It has already hatched.
