Field Notes
Description:
Females of this species may grow as large as 25–33 cm (10–13 in) in length; males are slightly smaller. Red stripes on the side of the head help distinguish this species from other North American turtle species and gives it its common name. The top shell is flattened and oval with a dark green background with light markings, although this pattern may vary among individuals.
Habitat:
I photographed this individual in a pond.
