Field Notes

Description:

Looks like a cave spider, but I need help identifying the right species. Am I on the right track? Is it something else?

Got a bit freaked out the first time I saw one, and tried to kill it with bug spray, but it didn't do anything besides making it angry and the thing jumped at me.

Habitat:

I live in Costa Rica, and have only encountered these ugly things in warm, humid places; as opposed to cooler, higher-altitude locations.

Species ID Suggestions

Whip Spider

Amblypygi

Comments (2)

Class Arachnida, but despite the names whip spider or tailless whip scorpions it is neither a spider nor a scorpion! There are many similar looking ones around, so closer ID is probably not possible from a picture alone. A common family is Phrynidae. http://museum.wa.gov.au/catalogues-beta/distribution-browser/amblypygi/cr http://eolspecies.lifedesks.org/pages/40167 https://www.flickr.com/photos/markus_oulehla/8018945753/
