Field Notes
Description:
The male is bright yellow for breeding season, while the female is a dull yellow-brown. They have conical beaks for eating seed, such as zinnia seed plucked from the flower. The male has contrasting black coloration on his wings, head, and tail.
Habitat:
These goldfinches are spending the summer in a suburban residential area of the Tennessee River Valley in North Alabama. This spotting is about 15 miles north of the Tennessee River. Cultivated fields are nearby, along with many homes, schools, and businesses. Undeveloped areas of marsh are also in the area, and small creeks which flow toward the Tennessee River.
Notes:
This mated pair is busy plucking the petals from zinnia flowers, to eat the seeds.
