Field Notes

Description:

Round, about the size of an average May beetle ("June bug"), or slightly smaller. Note broad, spade-like head, short antennae, deeply serrated front legs.

Habitat:

Found on a road along a ridge above the reservoir. Arid habitat with grasses, small shrubs, scattered cedar trees, yucca.

Notes:

These are dung-rolling scarab beetles that tear off chunks of animal scat and roll the balls to a suitable location for burial. A total of four beetles were seen at this location.
