Bengal / Clouded Monitor
Varanus bengalensis
7.9175, 98.4012
Field Notes
Description:
This Bengal Monitor was about 1.5 meter, including tail.
It was blowing himself up and releasing the air with loud growling noises. It was slashing his tail wildly.
Habitat:
Our garden Phuket Thailand. Near a small river and lake, very close to the mangroves and jungle.
Notes:
I heard the dogs bark and ran outside to look. There was the Monitor slashing its tail and trying to run through the corrugated wall! I called the dogs back (which wasn't easy, they were furious) and took some of these pictures, and let him/her be. He/She was spotted a bit later further into the garden and had passed his escape hole ? so must still felt comfortable enough to continue to roam around our garden. This was the second time I had seen the monitor. Once it ran away from me while I was hanging laundry and ran straight for his escape hole. After these pictures he was back in the garden the next day! So I guess he is not too worried although he runs away very very fast.
