Field Notes

Description:

This is a large specimen of the subspecies of water monitor that inhabits Singapore (and parts of nearby countries). The species is a common large lizard native to southern Asia. They range from "Sri Lanka and India to Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, and various islands of Indonesia, living in areas close to water."

Habitat:

This monitor was observed along the boardwalk leading away (and not far from) the nature center of the Sungei Buloh Weland Reserve (Singapore).

Notes:

Sungai Buloh Wetland Reserve is awash in these monitors. I saw at least 6 individuals in 2 hours. (Map marker not precise).

They were everywhere, so apparently quite habituated. I wanted to see a saltwater croc, but 6 of these beauties was fair compensation!
So beautiful Scott, looks so tranquil here....
