Field Notes

Description:

The Golden Birdwing (Troides rhadamantus) is a birdwing butterfly (Papilionidae; Papilioninae; Troidini) that inhabits the Philippines.

Troides rhadamanthus rhadamanthus (Lucas, 1835) occurs in the Philippines except in Palawan, Balabac, Calamian, and Dumaran, where the endemic subspecies Dr. Platen's Birdwing (Troides rhadamanthus plateni (Staudinger, 1888)) occurs instead.

Recorded hostplants: Aristolochia sp. (Aristolochiaceae). Many species of Aristolochia are eaten by the caterpillar larvae of swallowtail butterflies, thus making themselves unpalatable to most predators.

Habitat:

Backyard adjacent to an open space.
