Field Notes

Description:

Oblong blob of off-white fungus, ~ 50mm x 30mm, partially engulfing small pieces of gravel.

Habitat:

Suburban neighborhood on tropical upland plateau.

Notes:

Spotted attached to a dead root from a stressed tree. Possibly Polyporales sensu lato. The first image is an overview from above of the fungus in situ. The second image is a close-up of the upper surface showing the texture of the fungus. The third image is of the underside of the fungus after it was detached from the root.

Thanks for the comment, Mark. I wondered about Polyporaceae as well, particularly because of the appearance of the underside. By the by, the tree is a Hawaiian endemic, Acacia koa.
Very interesting. It looks like a Polyporaceae trying to grow through stones. It might help to know the species of tree.
