Description:
The Grey heron is strongly built and large, long-legged and long-necked predatory wading bird, with spear-like bill. About 80cm tall, maybe about 1m with the neck fully extended. Mainly grey above and whitish-grey below; the neck and the face are white, and there is a dark ardoise-grey crown.
Habitat:
Observed preying on fallowed agricultural fields in rural areas of Geneva lake valley - this particular field is in proximity to three ponds, one marsh and one artificial lake, at the feet of Jura mountain range. This is a resident bird around, and we see it all year round - Geneva lake valley is rich in marshes, ponds and lakes, and agricultural fields; and therefore almost an ideal hunting ground for herons.
