Field Notes

Description:

Adults can weigh between 10 - 25kg and be a height of 60 - 75 cm at shoulder (bucks - males slightly larger than does - females). In summer these deer are reddish brown but in winter their colour changes to grey (as seen above), pale brown or (occasionally) black. Their antlers are rugose, short (<30cm), 3 tines (points) on each. There can be heavy mortality shortly after birth and during first winter. They are usually solitary animals but may form small groups in winter.

Habitat:

My back garden

Notes:

I looked out my window this morning and there he was lying in the grass having a bit of a rest :) Such a nice surprise for a miserable Sunday morning. They usually come into my garden to eat the apples off our apple tree in the summer.
