Turdus philomelos
54.5772, -2.48936
Field Notes
Description:
Part of the true Thrush (turdus) family whose numbers are here are in serious decline making them on the red list with the RSPB. This one here was hopping about the cricket field looking for worms after the rain. slightly smaller than the mistle thrush with smaller specks on its chest. Also smaller than a female blackbird as you can see in photo 5.
Habitat:
seen on the cricket pitch at the side of the Eden river in Appleby in westmorland, Cumbria.
Notes:
Its habit of repeating song phrases distinguish it from singing blackbirds. It also likes to eat snails which it breaks into by smashing them against a stone with a flick of the head
