Field Notes

Description:

This one had a beak full of mayflies, I don't know how it kept catching more without dropping any of the ones it already had! listed as an amber species by the RSPB in the British isles due to its decline in numbers sighted here.

Habitat:

seen on the river Eden in Appleby in westmorland

I have edited my description to reflect our conversation regarding numbers and them moving with the weather pattern.
Yeah very strange! You're probably right about them moving with the weather which I guess would result in not an actual decline in species numbers but that they are just harder to find in Britain in cold winters. Sorry to hear about you being stuck at home, I had a double hernia op when I was 4 so can empathise with you on that front! Hope you get well soon :-)
Interesting facts: RSPB says spread into the British lowland over the last 150 years but now in moderate decline; BTO state 54% decline in Europe 1982-2005; Birdlife International state: In Europe, trends since 1980 show that populations have undergone a moderate increase (p<0.05), based on provisional data for 21 countries from the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme. Maybe the Grey Wagtails are doing what they have always done and moving with the weather, certainly no shortage of them in the tropics, especially in the mountains. We are currently having another cold snap with more snow on the higher mountains, temps around 8-18C (46-64F night-day), last week was 20-30C which is normal! I'm stuck at home anyway for another week having had a 2nd hernia op last week.
HI Malcolm, hope the weather in Spain is behaving itself now :-) I think the winters 10 years ago were perhaps milder than the past 4 as we seem to have had long cold spells stretching further into the year especially 3 years ago when we had snow for over 8 weeks and the temp in N.yorks reached a record -19 but I do agree that they seemed to be worse maybe 30 years ago when I was little cos we had enough snow in the garden to make Igloos haha!! the species listing system is from the RSPB which I use as I think its a bit more localised to areas here, I can change the info if it doesnt sound correct though.
I don't think the winters have been as harsh recently as they were 50-60 years ago, although worse than 10-20 years ago. They are partial migratory and England, Ireland and Denmark are at their northern limit in winter. There are lots here in winter but not so many in summer.
