I suggested an ID for you - Gyromitra esculenta
Nothing to fear if they're growing there, just don't eat them! The toxins won't absorb through your skin or anything.
Yikes!!! They are growing all over my parents property!
Lots of people did. But it's now known to be a very bad idea, especially for kids. They contain a strange toxin which you may find doesn't affect you the first nine times you consume it and then kills you on the tenth. Or it may make you very sick from the first time, or you may eat it your entire life and suffer no ill effects! Weird one, best avoided as much as I'd like to try it.
Now, They are on the POISON MUSHROOMS OF MISSOURI LIST...I wonder how close to death we came????
We used to eat these when I was a kid living near the river. My dad grew up eating them in the 30's, boiled, sliced then deep fried...
Or else a similar Gyromitra species.
