Field Notes

Description:

Papilio demoleus (Linnaeus, 1758) is a common and widespread swallowtail butterfly (Papilionidae). It gets its common names from its host plants, which are usually citrus species such as the cultivated lime. Unlike most swallowtail butterflies, it does not have a prominent tail. It is called by many names: Lime Butterfly, Chequered Butterfly, Common Lime Butterfly, Lemon Butterfly, Lime Swallowtail, Small Citrus Butterfly, Chequered Swallowtail, Mariposa del Muerte, Dingy Swallowtail, Citrus Swallowtail.

Papilio demoleus libanius (Fruhstorfer, 1908) is the ssp occurring in the Philippines generally.

This spotting is of a male Lime, my other spotting shows the female Lime butterfly: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/35415009.

Habitat:

Backyard garden.

Notes:

"Physical Description of Adult Butterfly: ... In space 1b on the hindwing, there is a red spot in both sexes. In the male, this spot is capped with a narrow blue lunule with a very narrow intervening black gap. In contrast, the red spot and the blue lunule in the female have a rather large black spot between them." Quoted from http://butterflycircle.blogspot.com/2011/11/life-history-of-lime-butter….
