Field Notes

Description:

Palmate leaves somewhat resembling a maple. Bark peals as it ages, leaving a patchy almost camouflage look. Produces flowers in a small ball.

Habitat:

Grows near or in the water, along a limestone-bedded creek.

Notes:

The birds are very fond of the seed puffs, particularly the finches and the waxwings.
