Field Notes

Description:

In breeding plumage: chestnut neck and body, dark grey wings, black chick and cap, diagnostic yellow horns behind the red eyes. Both adults alike.
In winter: white foreneck, chick and body, dark grey head and wings. Eyes still bright red.

Habitat:

Spotted in a small pond in the Prairies.
