Field Notes

Description:

Up to 1995 these birds had not been recorded in Singapore, there was just a small remnant population in Perak, Malaysia, some 400 miles to the north, with the remainder (about 5,000 birds) in Southern Sumatra, several hundred miles to the south. Some birds escaped from zoos in Malaysia and there are free-flying flocks in Singapore at the Mandai Zoo and Jurong Bird Park. It is assumed that those seen at Sungei Buloh (since the first record n 1998) come from one of these latter two places to feed. See reference links for more information.

Habitat:

Tidal mudflats surrounded by Mangroves.
