Field Notes

Description:

This is a first spotting for me of this long-tailed skipper butterfly. The Long-Tailed Skipper is a medium size butterfly with a hairy body and long hindwing tails. The body and wing bases are bluish-green or iridescent green.

Habitat:

This butterfly cannot survive in cold weather and is usually found in Texas and Florida. In warmer weather it can be found as far north as Illinois and New York. This spotting was on a warm day in October at Assateague Island National Seashore in Ocean City Maryland
