Field Notes

Description:

A medium-sized all-white heron with a sturdy yellow bill, dark legs and feet. A rather short, thick neck for a heron makes it have a swollen throat look. Immature entirely white without plumes and the bill starts out dark and gradually becomes yellow. Dark legs and feet. Rather short, thick neck for a heron.

Habitat:

On a bridge over a canal at Bayou Segnette State Park. This park is not far from the urban center of New Orleans, yet it features access to two types of wetlands, swamp and marsh. Saltwater intrusion coming into the canals from the Gulf of Mexico created the marsh. This is a remarkable habitat for plant and wildlife.
