Field Notes

Description:

A total length of 50 to 63 mm, it is one of the largest skimmers. Males become completely pruinose blue, with blue eyes and white faces. Younger males appear similar to females but gradually become blue. Females have white faces and develop blue eyes.

Habitat:

On a palm frond at Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve

Geodialist, thanks for the additional information. I added it to Notes; so it would never be lost. I have several more of these that I spotted during the BioBlitz, Now I know what to look for to narrow the ID. This is a new dragonfly for me :)

This dragonfly looks like a young female, as indicated by the flanges beneath its eighth abdominal segment that are used to scoop and hold a few drops of water during oviposition.
