Description:
Purple Swamphens, Porphyrio porphyria, are an old world bird not to be confused with the new-world equivalent, Porphyrio martinicus, American Purple Gallinule. At first glance they look similar, but the Swamphen is bulkier and lacks the light blue patch on the forehead that the Purple Gallinule has.
Notes:
Purple Swamphens are an introduced species in North America. They escaped in southern Florida in 1990 and have multiplied into a sustainable population.
