Field Notes

Description:

Mayapple is sometimes referred to as the Umbrella Plant because of its large, palmate leaves. The leaves unfurl in spring and shelter a single, fragrant white flower located in the 'Y' of the stem.

Habitat:

Woodland Trail

Notes:

Though the common name is mayapple, in some areas it is the flower that appears in early May, not the "apple". The fruit or "apple" is usually produced early in summer and ripens later in summer.

Its common names are mayapple, American mandrake, wild mandrake, and ground lemon.
