Anhinga
Anhinga anhinga
29.8982, -90.1625
Field Notes
Description:
A large, dark water bird with a long, thin neck and a long, thin, pointed bill. It has a long tail and silver patches on the wings. A bird of southern swamps, the Anhinga is known as the Water-Turkey for its swimming habits and broad tail, and also as the Snake-Bird for its habit of swimming with just its long head and neck sticking out of the water.
Habitat:
Drying its wings at the edge of a pond at Bayou Segnette State Park. This park is not far from the urban center of New Orleans, yet it features access to two types of wetlands, swamp and marsh. Saltwater intrusion coming into the canals from the Gulf of Mexico created the marsh. This is a remarkable habitat for plant and wildlife.
Notes:
The Anhinga is frequently seen soaring high in the sky overhead. It is a graceful flier and can travel long distances without flapping its wings, much in the manner of a Turkey Vulture.
