Field Notes

Description:

Small red bug walking among leaves near a creek.

Notes:

The bright red color caught my eye. Some kind of mite or tick?

Species ID Suggestions

Trombidiidae

Trombidium grandissimum

Comments (2)

Based on the location, this is not T. grandissimum, but a velvet mite in the family Trombidiidae.
I'm unsure of its scientific name, but these are commonly called red velvet mites. They are very cool and fuzzy-looking under magnification
