Field Notes

Description:

This is a fairly large (4-12 cm) cylindrical millipede. This one was even a little longer than 12 cm. The body has a rich shade of brownish purple segments separated by lighter, reddish brown rings. There is an extra wide segment right in back of the head whose front edge gives the appearance of an attractive reddish brown stripe across the millipedes' forehead.

Habitat:

This millipede is found throughout the Eastern United States, this one being found towards the westernmost part of its range in SE Texas 85 masl.

Notes:

Reminiscent of some millipedes we have in Ecuador, I was happy to come across it.

Thanks Ingrid. Fortunately, I wasn't in a hurry and could wait for him to un-coil.
Nice coiled up pose! Nice pic!
