Description:

O tambaqui apresenta nomes em outras linguas que são traduzidos como "pacu escuro" ou "pacu negro", esta cor escura ou negra ocorre, com o tambaqui, em rios do Peru e mesmo no Brasil apesar da cor comum ao tambaqui ser outra. Porém esta cor também ocorre com o pacu caranha (Piaractus mesopotamicus=Colossoma mitrei) que apresenta a cor negra quando encontrado em rios do Pantanal de águas cristalinas e ocorre também com (Colossoma bidens). Já o pacu-caranha do Rio Aquidauana é bem mais claro, com uma coloração bastante semelhante a comum ao tambaqui.
