Field Notes

Description:

Tan body with dark brown saddles down the back. This is a pretty young one and still has his yellow tail, which they use to stick up in the air and wiggle like a worm to attract lizards, which they then eat.

Habitat:

This is as flipped, he was found under a log on a rainy, cool day. Mostly oak forest.

Definitely. The other copperhead we found, also flipped under a log, had itself buried in the leaf litter a little bit. My friend was digging through the leaf litter looking for salamanders and brushed his hand over it several times before he uncovered it and saw it. Luckily they aren't aggressive and it was cold so that snake didn't move at all!
That's some camouflage. Easy to miss in the brown leaf litter.
The yellow tail detail is perfect and the mimetic patterns of the skin are very nice, this one can skip to a non pro -herper-eye.
Awesome Ashley, beautifull capture, great info, congrats and thanks for sharing
