Little Blue Heron
Egretta caerulea
29.8983, -90.1638
Field Notes
Description:
A smallish heron of the southeastern United States, the Little Blue Heron breeds in various freshwater and estuarine habitats. It is the only heron species in which first-year birds and adults show dramatically different coloration: first-year birds are pure white, while adults are blue. The bill is light bluish grey with a dark tip. Legs are greenish. This one caught itself a nice crab, but returned immediately to fish for more.
Habitat:
On a canal at Bayou Segnette State Park. This park is not far from the urban center of New Orleans, yet it features access to two types of wetlands, swamp and marsh. Saltwater intrusion coming into the canals from the Gulf of Mexico created the marsh. This is a remarkable habitat for plant and wildlife.
