Field Notes

Description:

A smallish heron of the southeastern United States, the Little Blue Heron breeds in various freshwater and estuarine habitats. It is the only heron species in which first-year birds and adults show dramatically different coloration: first-year birds are pure white, while adults are blue. The bill is light bluish grey with a dark tip. Legs are greenish.

Habitat:

On a bridge over a canal at Bayou Segnette State Park. This park is not far from the urban center of New Orleans, yet it features access to two types of wetlands, swamp and marsh. Saltwater intrusion coming into the canals from the Gulf of Mexico created the marsh. This is a remarkable habitat for plant and wildlife.

You are welcome :) I saw lots of firsts on that 2013 trip.
Wow! Great pictures gatorfellows! Appreciate you letting me see these pictures of the changing little blue heron. I actually would not have known what that bird was if I had spotted it. I have spotted the juvenile little blue heron twice since I've been in florida in two different places. Ashley told me they will start to grow into their adult blue color in another two months. I will be back in Maryland by then. Thanks for sharing these photos!
