Field Notes

Description:

Of the hundred or so seals on the beach that day, this little one captivated me! Not only was it in its own world, geographically and mentally, it looked like it was smiling!

Habitat:

On an island northwest of the Antarctic Peninsula. One of about 100 fur seals on the island’s beach that day. The seals lived alongside 2-3 times as many Gentoo Penguins and some number of skuas.

Deception Island is a former whaling station, littered with a building and equipment used in the slaughtering. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deception_Island

Notes:

The animals in Antarctica rarely, if ever, see humans; so they do not know to be afraid.
