Field Notes

Description:

Most likely a male Blue Diadem Butterfly since the female are described as a little bit yellowish. This butterfly is native to the African zone. The wingspan is about 8.0 – 9.0 cm.

Habitat:

This was found in a forest reserve in Uganda (Mabira Forest).
A lot of different types of butterflies, this one included, were feeding off something that looked like bird dropping on a cliff clost to a small creek.

Notes:

Hypolimnas salmacis has an optical characteristic. The blue areas change their colour, if you change the angle of vision.

Sure thing Pam!
Hi Tiz, I have created a mission for East Africa and cordially invite you to add your Uganda photos to it. http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/402896137
Thank you Adarsha :)
I do understand now that this butterfly is unique to Afrika, as well as the first spotting here on Noah! And it still took you about 0.3 s to ID it :) Hats off for you Sir! BR Tina
Yeah, I just do the ID, without being responsable for the rest ;-)... Welcome, sometimes I am quite fast :-))...
Thank you bayucca for the super fast ID response! My work remains, to fill in some information :) BR Tina
