Field Notes

Description:

What is this skinny noisy ugly thing??
Very loud.

Habitat:

Near our B&B but also near wooded area.

Notes:

This bird was loud! It behaved like a fully grown bird, but when I zoomed in it looks more like a fledgeling. And what colour is it anyway?

It might be a young one. It looks thin. We only see them as visitors so we're not experts. Maybe some Queenslanders will know more. Shanna? Neil? Leanne? Christiane? Mac? I just noticed they live in Victoria too but "In southern parts of eastern Australia the species is migratory, moving north to overwinter" I guess their heads get cold. :)
Thanks for the ID Leuba and Mark. Do you think this is a juvenile though? Look at the patches in coloring and it has no knob on the beak. What do you think?
Also called 'Leatherheads' because of no feathers up top. Yes pretty ugly but they don't care.
I agree they are noisy ! I heard them a couple of times up in Queensland.
