Stalk-Eyed Fly

Very happy to find one in the wild whilst working in the Zimbabwe captial, Harare. Very distinctive eyes perched on the end of long stalks for the sole purpose of mating. Rival males square up head to head and the the one with the longer stalks intimidates the other who "cannot see past his rival" and the match is won. Genetics judged soley on eye stalk length. With clear wings and an "all black" body he made himself easily seen although he was quite small.
