Field Notes

Description:

The tallest living terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant.
The love and care this mother showed for her calf was an extraordinary scene to watch.

Habitat:

Biome: tree savanna, subtropical dry forest. The dry season (winter) just started in the area of the spotting.

Notes:

Place of the spots: Kruger National Park

All giraffes in the area had a lot of tick infestations. Red-billed oxpeckers were feeding on them.

Fun facts:
A giraffe is able to clean its ears with its own tongue.
A giraffe can go without drinking water longer than a camel can.
Newborn giraffe calves begin their lives by falling 6 feet to the ground
