Field Notes

Description:

small races22-26" (56-66 cm); large races 35-45" ( 86-114c). Brownish body with black head, long black neck, and conpicuous white cheek patch. The smaller Brant has a ashorter neck and lacks the white cheek path

Habitat:

lakes, bays, rivers, and marshes. Often feeds and open grasslands and stubble fields

Notes:

4-8 whitish eggs and large mass of grass and moss lined with down. When people speak of "wild geese" it is generally this familiar species they have in mind. Breeds from Alaska East to Baffin Island and south to California, Illinois and Massachusetts.
