Description:

The American Painted Lady or American Lady is a butterfly found throughout North America. Vanessa virginiensis lives in flowery habitats, usually in mountains. The larvae feed on various Asteraceae, especially the cudweeds of genus Gnaphalium.

Habitat:

Pinyon juniper woodland 7,324 ft

Notes:

At the summit of Red Butte, next to the fire look-out station. I was surprised to see it, since I was not aware they occurred in this part of the state. Also saw, red admirals, painted ladies and west coast ladies on this mountain.
