Field Notes

Description:

Good-sized (~ 10 cm diameter) red flower with frilly-edged petals.

Habitat:

Pacific northwest suburban area.

Notes:

Spotted in the back yard of a residence. Inside the flower were a spider (not imaged) and a brown slug (more obvious in the second image than the first). Also visible, at "4 o'clock" in the first image, and at "5 o'clock" in the second is a flower bud.

Your welcome, glad I could help. There are a lot of types of poppy out there. I suspect this may be a variety of oriental poppy because of the frilled edge of the petals.
Dan, thanks for the ID. Interestingly, my son's mother-in-law suggested that this spotting was a poppy, but I disagreed because its petals did not have the smooth edges that I have always associated with poppies, for example those worn on Remembrance Day. After receiving your suggestion, I educated myself just a bit online, and have edited the spotting. "Knowledge is Good." Thanks again.
