Field Notes

Description:

European hoverfly.

This hoverfly imitate wasps. They are black with yellow or white stripes or patches. It is a typical case of mimicry, deceiving predators to mistake him as a wasp. Not only do they have wasp-like strips, they also developed dark wings, resembling those of the social wasps. Their antennae are remarkable as well: extremely long and wasp like, not found in many other flies.
The genus is notorious for the many look-a-like species. The larvae live in decaying wood and probably feed on root aphids.

Habitat:

Mountain prairie, not very high (1000m.), with scattered pine trees. At Parque Natural La Pedriza de Manzanares, Sierra de Guadarrama.

Notes:

Camera Model: NIKON D300. Exposure Time: 1/640 sec.; f/14; ISO Speed Rating: 400. Exposure Bias: -1 EV. Focal Length: 300.0 mm.

Thanks 4D4Gprojectnoah. I found it in a mountain prairie, in Madrid, Spain. I thought it was just a wasp until I saw the pics in the computer at home
