Field Notes

Description:

Large bird, sits low in water, colored unmistakably as shown in summer plumage. Note sharp bill, excluding identification as a duck.

Habitat:

Large, artificial reservoir in an urban park near downtown Colorado Springs. Most adjacent "habitat" is urban residential. Many elm trees, pines, cottonwoods planted around the lake and lawn.

Notes:

Apparently this is not an uncommon migrant species along the Front Range.
