Meadow Death-Camas
Zygadenus venenosus
50.1118, -120.788
Field Notes
Description:
Fine slender leaves, basal, grasslike, perennial bulb, flower grows on long stalk, in a pointed cluster at the top of the stalk. Each flower is creamy white and star-shaped.
Habitat:
Meadows, open grassy areas on a dry hillside in this location above the visitor center in Merritt, BC.
Notes:
All parts of this plant are deadly poisonous to humans and grazing animals. The poison is caused by powerful alkaloids. The native people of BC had to use great care to not harvest this by mistake when they were collecting the Common Camas bulbs. Hikers beware not to nibble on this one. They were right beside the trail!
