Field Notes

Description:

Help me with identifying this Cicada. It was very noisy.

Notes:

I found it in a isolated section of the library and I did not kill it, dirt was sticking on it all over, so I cleaned the poor thing and left it to rest in some corner. I found it dead the other day. Then I found out that they do not live much longer after waking up from their long 17 years slumber.

thanks, this site is useful and so many helpful people on here :-)
Akhil, 17 year cicadas are only found in Eastern North America. Pretty cool looking one you've found, though.
wow hard... maybe we wait for an expert to log in :) good luck
Oh! I did not knew that, still waiting for an ID.
Thanks for those pics - they are much better. That's right about the 17 years Akhil but ONLY for some species. Do you know other cicada species have different cycles but always a prime number !! (3 5 7 11 13 17 19 etc.) Now to find an ID.
haha I will crop the image, I thought people would be able to zoom in on it.
Hi Akhil. Can you crop pic to make it look bigger? If so noisy maybe a glorified politician cicada. :)
