Field Notes

Description:

The Mute Swan is a species of swan known as mute, because they are less vocal then other members of the swan family. They are also distinguished by their orange bill bordered with black and the pronounced black knob on top of the bill. They are large waterfowl measuring between 125 to 170 cm (49 to 67 inches) in length. The males are larger than the females and have a larger knob on their bills. They are also one of the heaviest flying birds weighing between 8.5 to 12 kilos (19 to 26 lbs). Judging by the size of the knob on its beak and its bright orange bill, I assume it is a male.

Habitat:

This one is one of several Mute Swans that live on around this stretch of river in Ely.
